Black Cow Chophouse: Reviews & Ratings
We had an absolutely perfect experience at Black Cow last night. The food was amazing, but even more so, the service. Josh at the bar is the man!! I’m a 48 y/o woman with many of martinis under my belt, but he made me hands down, the BEST espresso martini I’ve ever had. Absolute perfection- and created such a fun, chill vibe at the bar. Good times!
Love this place. Excellent staff, great service (We had John tonight he was amazing), and amazing food at great prices. Ribeye, filet, (all their steaks really), crab cakes, mushroom ragout, chimichurri potatoes, and desserts are all outstanding. Great wine selection, and awesome cocktails. The food was perfect. Service was 11/10, John was on point, attentive, knowledgeable and fun to talk with. So happy every time we come here. Our favorite spot in Charlottesville by far.
This was our first visit to Black Cow, we came to celebrate our anniversary. We didn’t have a reservation, but showed up at open and there was a line of people already gathering outside. Upon open, we were seated immediately. I just have to say everything was a 10/10. The food and service were outstanding. We started with their French onion soup - divine! For entrees we got steaks with a side of red potato smashers, creamed spinach, and fried Brussels sprouts (this was our fave). Shared a drink that was tasty (Polynesian inspired) and dessert was an orange crème Brûlée which was heavenly and tasted like a creamsicle in the best way. We also loved the Belgian Chocolate Mousse. Everyone was friendly, warm, and our server was attentive and knowledgeable. The atmosphere was soooo cozy and inviting. Needless to say, we’ll be back!
Came here for the UVA graduation weekend. Pre booked months in advance. Never went here prior (partially my fault) and expected the atmosphere to be more sophisticated than it was given the prices. $95 per person (we went as 5) is pretty hefty even for a special weekend. I really only had the 2 complaints, the atmosphere and the price. Price: The price isn’t the issue in itself but it is for the amount and type of food. My experience may be different as it was a special weekend. The food itself tasted great, wasn’t a fan of the family style sides, they just really weren’t enough for all 5 of us, we each got a small scoop of mash potatoes. The dessert was pretty meh as well. The highlight was the steak by far, it was a great cut and was definitely satisfied. I enjoyed the sides, was just a little disappointed in the portion for 5 people. Atmosphere: The restaurant as a whole is quite small and a large portion was outside. We got seated inside facing the outside part. Lots of flies coming over the food. The plates were chipped around the edges surprisingly. We were all dressed up in nice clothing and it was pretty mixed throughout the restaurant with other people wearing shorts/T shirts. I’m not one to care about atmosphere usually but this is more for other people as this restaurant (at least from people I hear from) is advertised as more upscale. I can see myself coming back maybe when it’s not a special weekend because the menu does look interesting and I would likely comeback with less people.
Exceptional dining experience. Like, seriously, everything was on point. Service - top notch. Valerie was friendly, patient, and inviting. Great recommendations and efficient but paced service. Food - also top notch. You can literally see them grilling meats in front of you. I ordered the crab cakes (not grilled) and they were delicious. Side of skin-on red potatoes were heavenly. Loved this place. A must stop.
Sooo good. Every steak is delicious, tender, and juicy. Service is great. Definitely recommend!!!
Black Cow Chophouse has a truly lovely atmosphere—warm, welcoming, and perfect for a special night out. The food was excellent, especially the lobster mac and cheese, which was rich, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. The Caesar salad was fresh and well-balanced, and the drinks were equally impressive. While they didn’t have the vegetarian option we originally came for, the manager went out of her way to make things right and generously compensated us with a gift card to come back another time. That level of care and customer service really stood out and made the experience memorable. We’re definitely looking forward to returning!
Second time at Black Cow. The first time was incredible and my second time was even better. Fried oysters were light and fresh. Steak tar tar was flavorful and perfectly diced.steaks were quality and cooked to perfection. Wine selection was varied and priced well. The lobster Mac was a standout for our table. Service really put our experience over the top. Our server Steph was knowledgeable, personable and timely. Host and manager on duty were also friendly and professional . All in all an amazing night on West Main Street. Thank you so much for the lovely evening.
